Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE)

“Defining functional abilities and limitations”

A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is a 3-hour assessment to determine a workers abilities and limitations. The medical experts at Beckmann & Associates are trained in the use of a variety of standardised and non-standardized assessments including a BTE Equipment and EPIC dynamic Lifting tests that evaluate the individuals performance against identified work-related criteria.

An FCE can assist in assessing performance, identifying alternative treatment modes and providing direction for vocational activity and graduated return to work programs. These evaluations may also be used for pre employment testing or part of a pre employment testing package.

An FCE Assessment includes:

Short interview with the worker to obtain:

  • History of injury

  • Workers own perceived abilities
  • Pain questionnaire

Physical Assessment of:

  • Range of motion
  • Strength
  • Ability to carry/lift various weights/heights
  • Use of stairs
  • Ability to endure postural demands and tolerances in a range of positions: sitting, reaching, flexion.

A comprehensive written report outlining the results of the assessment which includes postural tolerances, lifting capacity, indication of physical ability to perform a particular job (current or proposed).
